Stephen Metherell

1961 born Knotty Corner, father was farmhand/builder and mother was evacuated from London in second world war

1965 Parkham Primary School, 3 miles walk from home

1968 Parkham Junior School

1972 Only boy at Parkham to pass 11+ and go to Bideford Grammar School, class 1C first to include girls.  Switzerland holiday.

1975 Joined with Geneva to form Bideford Comprehensive School, class 4N1.  Ski holiday to Val D’Isere France 1* award

1978 Joined Royal Air Force as Jet Engine Technician, passed out from RAF Swinderby as Aircraftsman

1979 Passed out from RAF Halton as Junior Technician, posted to RAF Lyneham on Hercules C130, minor servicing Blue Team.  Bought 1st car and passed driving test in Chippenham

1980 Posted to RAF Chivenor on Hawk T mk1, minor servicing Aircraft Servicing Flight.  Promoted to Corporal whilst on detachment during Falklands war.  British Sub Aqua Club 3rd class diver – Portreath expedition

1982 Posted to RAF St Athan on Tornado GR1 and F3, third line servicing Aircraft Engineering Squadron.  Competent Crew sailor – MedSailor from Cagliari to Syracuse and Palermo – Services Offshore Race Queen Elizabeth Cup.  2nd class diver – Isles of Scilly and Mull expedition.  Bought 1st computer a ZX Spectrum – computing was to be an integral part of my skill set for the rest of my life.  Passed HGV driving test

1984 RAF Bruggen, Germany on Tornado GR3, first line HAS boss/rectification crew.  Advance diver – L’Estartit/Gibraltar/Norway/Cyprus expedition.  Joint Services Ski Championships Oberammergau.

1986 RSAF Dhahran, Saudi Arabia – Tornado Jet Engine Shop RB199 technician trainer.  Bought 1st house in Bideford

1989 RSAF Khamis Mushayt, Saudi Arabia – Tornado Work Centre Supervisor for Jet Engine Shop RB199.  Camping on the Red Sea coast most weekends though out the year

1990 Gulf war.  Bought 2nd house in Bideford

1992 RSAF Dhahran.  Deputy Senior Quality Controller for Tornado IDS and ADV and Hawk aircraft

1994 Bought 3rd house in Bideford

1998 Retired early to Bideford running 1st house as tourist accommodation

2007 G H Little’s fruit & veg delivery driver in North Devon

2011 Began rabbit production at home with two New Zealand and two Californian rabbits

2014 Eaton Aerospace sub-assembly and valves for Boeing Airbus and military aircraft at South Molton, LEAN 5S+ champion 

2016 Aldi Deputy/Training Manager for new store in Bideford

Travelled widely including America, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Indonesia, Italy, Jordan, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand.

Green fingered from my early farming life, always growing something from exotic orchids to common garden vegetables.  People are always surprised at my crop of figs and kiwis each year
