My career was spent locally. After leaving BGS I spent nearly three years with Oliver & Dyer Chartered Architects and Surveyors at the top of Bridgeland Street, Bideford. I then worked as a technical assistant with the Bideford Rural District Council at Grenville House, The Quay, Bideford.
My duties there included housing design, engineering works, building control, housing maintenance, planning and some public health. At local government reorganisation I transferred to the Torridge District Council and finally took early retirement 39 years later from my post of Housing Maintenance Manager.
During my early ‘retirement’ period I set and ran as a sole practioner a planning and building design company – Archi-Planning Ltd.
I finished competitive running upon leaving BGS but took up soccer for about twenty years and then followed this up with squash for a further twenty years until our local venue at Lenwood, Northam was closed. Since that time, I have continued to play tennis and road cycle when weather permits for a man who will be 72 next month.
I am still with my first wife of 51 years! And we have a daughter who is Head of Physical Education at Colyton Grammar School south east Devon and a son who is a Chartered Accountant and partner of Glover Stanbury at Barnstaple.
