While my classroom performance was ordinary and unspectacular, it was a
different matter on the sports field where modest success was achieved in rugby, cricket, gymnastics and athletics. I was in Stucley House.
I trained as a journalist on the local Bideford Gazette, following in the
footsteps of fellow Old Boys Phil Day and Derek Bidgeway, at the same
enjoying cricket with the BGS Old Boys team. This ended when I moved from the area to further my career, which progressed from print journalism into regional television.
Even though my TV career meant I was away from Bideford and lasted 35 years I still managed to maintain contact with the Old Boys Association members and activities, and attended the annual dinners regularly. Of course, the highlight was becoming President. These occasions were so important and continue to be so as it enabled lasting friendships to be renewed, and give voice to the School Song and The Lads That Are Away. Long may it continue!
